Wish list
In your initial consultation with your designer, it's important that you create good and clear wish list. Things that are important to you, things that you need to have in your new space. It is also crucial that you be able to communicate with your designer at this stage as what you really like to achieve, what your desires are, your time frame and understanding of your budget.
Try
to keep finish details simple, but elegant. Try to devise a floor plan that opens up cramped spaces, by adding high ceiling and lots of light to help small places more spacious. The ceiling plan through out the house is important part of design strategy. Try to pay attention to all details like, molding and caseworks, they blend your place into a pleasant environment. For example MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a great natural choice for trims, its easy to trim and dimensionally stable, but creates lot of dust and is heavy to carry around when you work with it. Look at some design magazines, get ideas from other designers and try to add them to your wish list then communicate that with your designer.
Colors
Color defines personality. The advantage of a colorful home with brightly painted colors represent different feeling like, warm, bold, playful, overpowering, excitement or subtle. Choosing a combination of right colors and trims is very important to the final finish of your project. Remember an addition has to fit in, it must add to original, not just to be added to it. Addition has to be appropriate to the house and shows respect to the homeowner.
